General Information
Portuguese civil registry regulations require that the death of Portuguese citizens occurred abroad be registered in Portugal with the Civil Registry Office (Conservatória do Registo Civil) where the person’s birth is registered.
The registration may be requested through the Portuguese Consulate with jurisdiction over the area where the death occurred, or directly at the Conservatória do Registo Civil.
Consular Registration
The following documents must be submitted to the nearest Consulate:
· Certified copy of the Death Certificate (*);
· Portuguese Identification Card (Cartão do Cidadão/Bilhete de Identidade) of the deceased (for Portuguese citizens not previously registered at the Consulate);
· Certified copy of the deceased’s birth certificate.

All payments must be made in cash, money order or certified check to the order of the Consulate of Portugal.
(*) If the registration is to be requested directly to the “Conservatória” in Portugal, please submit a translation of the death certificate legalized by the nearest Portuguese Consulate.
